A Livermore man died after an apparent mechanical issue with his bicycle caused him to crash over the handlebars while riding in town on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The solo crash occurred just before 3 p.m. Tuesday with a 58-year-old cyclist traveling eastbound on Encino Drive near Laguna Street, according to the Livermore Police Department.

Investigators reviewed video footage from the neighborhood and preliminarily determined that the cyclist “appeared to have a mechanical issue with his bicycle causing him to be ejected over the handlebars,” LPD said. “There was no vehicle involved and it does not appear speed was a factor.”

The man, who was wearing a helmet, was critically injured, police said. A passerby found the cyclist and began CPR until LPD officers and paramedics arrived to take over life-saving measures. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The name of the cyclist has not been released publicly, with next-of-kin notification from the coroner still pending.
