Southeastern Alameda County was hit with a third wildfire in the past five summer days, with the Vargas Fire between Fremont and Sunol sending smoke into the Tri-Valley on Saturday afternoon.
The fire burned approximately 10 acres of mainly dry, vegetative land in the hills west of Interstate 680 after igniting under unconfirmed circumstances near Vargas Road at around 2 p.m. Saturday (July 25). Forward progress was stopped but containment was still listed as 0% within about an hour, according to Cal Fire.
Almost exactly 24 hours earlier, fire crews started battling a 10-acre fire in south Pleasanton near the intersection of I-680 and Sunol Boulevard. The so-called Pleasanton Fire reached 10 acres and was fully contained later Friday night, according to Cal Fire.
The fires on back-to-back days followed the much larger – and awkwardly named – Little Fire that ignited at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 21) in the area of Vallecitos and Little Valley roads, charring 1,007 acres and threatening some neighborhoods in southern Pleasanton, including Ruby Hill, that first afternoon and evening.
Fire crews began to gain control of the Little Fire overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, but it is still considered active – listed by Cal Fire as 90% contained as of Saturday afternoon.
