A Hart Middle School student riding his bicycle was injured Friday morning after a collision with a car at the intersection of Willow Road and West Las Positas Boulevard, authorities said.

The boy sustained a pelvic fracture and was taken to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland for treatment, according to Pleasanton police Capt. Kurt Schlehuber. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

In a statement to the community, Hart principal Gwendolyn DeWees said the school’s thoughts were with the student and his family “during this difficult time”.

“We recognize that news of an incident involving a member of our school community can be distressing,” DeWees added. “Our school counseling team and support staff are available to provide support to students and staff who may need it.”

According to the police department’s activity page, a call came in about 8:30 a.m. reporting a traffic collision with injuries in front of the entrance to the middle school. A report was taken and no one was arrested, according to the incident report. Police cleared the scene after an hour, according to the online incident report.

DeWees said emergency personnel responded to the scene but declined to share further details, citing the desire to respect the student and family’s privacy.

Schlehuber confirmed further details on the police investigation to the Pleasanton Weekly on Saturday afternoon.

The initial call reported a collision between a student bicyclist and a car at the intersection next to Hart on Friday morning, with the boy still in the roadway with a serious leg injury, according to Schlehuber.

The subsequent investigation revealed the driver was traveling southbound on Willow Road and was stopped at the red light at West Las Positas Boulevard. When the light turned green, the driver proceeded with a left turn at the intersection but the car struck the student who was crossing West Las Positas Boulevard northbound on his bicycle, Schlehuber said.

The collision occurred in the crosswalk at the intersection, which is an unprotected left turn for drivers going from Willow Road onto eastbound West Las Positas Boulevard, according to Pleasanton police Lt. Brandon Stocking.

The driver, whose name was not released publicly, remained at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation, according to police.

DeWees said the safety of students and staff remains the school’s highest priority.

“We are committed to working with our families, local authorities and community partners to promote safe travel to and from school,” she said. “We appreciate everyone’s continued care and vigilance, particularly during busy arrival and dismissal times.”

The incident comes two days after the Pleasanton Police Department announced it was awarded a $46,140 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to “support ongoing enforcement and education programs aimed at reducing serious injuries and deaths on local roads”.

  1. I wish I could say I was surprised. If anything, surprised this hasn’t happened by Willow and Gibraltar, where it gets busy and people seem to have no idea how to yield or take the right of way at a stop sign….(I’ve been saying there needs to be a traffic light there for a long time).

It is shameful how people drive, especially around school. No patience, and seems they think wherever they have to go, or rushing to get their kid ahead of the bell, is an excuse to drive wildly when a ton of students are out and about. Safety first, folks. The rules to keep everyone safe apply to everyone, no matter how much of a rush you think you’re in.
