The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau has confirmed the identity of a driver who died after a semi-truck carrying a load of meat slammed into the back of his SUV during the morning commute on Interstate 680 in Fremont earlier this month.

The victim was identified as 68-year-old Walnut Creek resident Donald Eng. The circumstances of the deadly crash remain under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

According to initial details reported by the CHP, the collision unfolded just after 7 a.m. July 18 on southbound I-680 at Auto Mall Parkway when a meat truck rear-ended a Toyota Venza and then hit three other vehicles before going down an embankment on the right shoulder of the freeway.

The Venza’s driver – later identified as Eng – was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. Two other people involved in the five-vehicle crash sustained minor injuries and were taken to Fremont-area hospitals for treatment, the CHP said at the time.

Anyone who has information related to the fatal crash investigation can contact CHP’s Dublin office at 925-828-0466.
