Luka Mijatovic, the 17-year-old senior at Foothill High School, was one of the headlines from the recently completed Toyota National Swimming Championships held July 25 to Aug. 1 in Irvine.
Mijatovic, who will head to the University of Texas after graduating from Foothill, won the men’s 400 freestyle on Friday.
He stalked Ryan Erisman throughout the race, then blew by in the final 25 yards, touching the wall in 3:43.5, a time that was a new 17-18 national age group record and made him the youngest national champion since Michael Phelps.
Next up for Mijatovic is the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships Aug. 17-20 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Mijatovic opened the meet with a third-place finish in the men’s 1,500 freestyle with 15:08.12. He came back with a win in the 18-and-under 200 free, clocking a 1:46.04.
In his final event of the meet, he was third in the 800 free with a time of 7:48.57. Erisman was the winner with a 7:43.53.
