The Amador Valley girls’ soccer team, the top-seeded team, charged into the semifinals of the North Coast Section Division I tournament but ran into a San Ramon Valley team hitting on all cylinders and fell 5-1.
San Ramon Valley, who then beat Carondelet in the finals, jumped out to the 1-0 lead before the Dons tied it up when a pass from Maylen Montoya to Angel Akanyirige got the attack going.
Akanyirige dribbled the ball through the SRV defense and covered about half the field to score on a great shot past the SRV keeper.
SRV answered on a corner kick moments later. Sydney Head punched the ball away for the save. Unfortunately, the ball fell to the feet of an SRV attacker who slotted the ball past Head, to make it 2-1.
The second half saw three more Wolves goals. On the first, Head deflected the ball for a save, SRV shot again and Head saved again, but then the Wolves shot again and scored on their third attempt for the 3-1 lead.
The fourth goal came through the crossing of some communications wires on the Amador backline that left a San Ramon Valley attacker alone in the box for a shot past the keeper for the 4-1 lead.
San Ramon Valley added a late one for the 5-1 final.
In the end, the Wolves controlled the game throughout and outshot the Dons 10-5.
Due to the success of the season for the Dons, they earned a spot in the CIF Regional Tournament, with the first round to be played this week.
Amador was seeded No. 7 and was sent on the road to the No. 2 seed Del Oro of Loomis. The Golden Eagles are 12-1-6 on the season and were the champs of the very tough Sierra Foothill League.
Oak Ridge, Rocklin, Granite Bay, Whitney and Folsom are the other teams in the league.
It’s a tough draw for Del Oro as Amador is hardly a typical No. 7 seed. The Dons have been tough all year and had allowed only one goal in the last nine games heading into the loss to SRV in the semifinals.
San Ramon Valley was seeded No. 3 and set to host Leigh (6) of San Jose this week.
Foothill volleyball
The Falcons split matches to open the season, both intense, high-quality games.
Foothill won its opening match beating Campolindo 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 29-27.
Three seniors started their final year for Foothill with big games. Kayan Vohra (13 kills, 3 blocks), Noah Mitzenmacher (22 receptions, 11 digs), and Casey Collins (10 kills, 10 receptions) all set the pace for the Falcons.
Later in the week, Foothill fell to a talent-loaded Santa Cruz team by a score of 21-25, 28-26, 27-25, 22-25, 10-15. Sophomore setter Josh Salonga had a great night, along with junior Dean Caudill and senior Caden Stedman.
A special happy birthday!
I’ll close this week with a birthday wish to Jenny Underwood of Pleasanton.
Underwood, who is the wife of longtime iconic Amador Valley basketball coach Don Underwood, turned 77 last week.
She was a longtime teacher in both Pleasanton and Sunol, and she has always been very involved in teaching fitness since the 1980s. Underwood is still teaching strength and Zumba Gold/Shine dance classes at The Bay Club, the city of Pleasanton and the Stoneridge Creek retirement community.
Happy Birthday Jenny, and keep helping people!
Results needed
If you see the Foothill volleyball results and wonder why your athlete didn’t get their games in the paper, it’s because Foothill coach Dusty Collins sends in the results every Sunday.
It doesn’t mean the coach of the teams has to send me results; it can be a parent volunteer that wants to take the burden off the coach.
I know spring sports are underway, so it would be great to see our local athletes get the credit they deserve.
If you are willing to take on the responsibility, shoot me an email at acesmag@aol.com, let me know the sport and I will let you know the information I am looking for. Our deadline is noon Sunday each week.
Editor’s note: Dennis Miller is a contributing sports writer for Embarcadero Media Foundation’s East Bay Division. To contact him about his Pleasanton Preps column, email acesmag@aol.com.
