CCOP 8th grade girls advances to final round

The Catholic Community of Pleasanton (CCOP) eighth grade girls (team 8001) had the first place berth going into the playoffs last Sunday. CCOP faced the 4th place team SM/SC (team 8006) who played a very tough game. CCOP struggled throughout the first three quarters and their play was uncharacteristically flat, with the ball not falling in the hoop. Tough defense was key to keeping them in the game with Nicole Torquato, Kelly Parsons (four points), Brittany Bicomong (one point), Nicole Ponzini (two points, four rebounds) and Sydney Okumura (five rebounds) working the press. Jessica Woodruff (two points) played tough with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists. Down by five points at the start of the fourth quarter, CCOP was determined. CCOP sparked in the fourth quarter outscoring SM/SC 16-8. Top scorers Lauren MacDonnell’s (10 points) run of six points and Jessica Morselli’s three-pointer (eight points) put CCOP back in the game. For the second time this season, CCOP fans had knots in their stomach as Morselli’s free throw rounded the rim and dropped to tie the game. It was Lyndsay Godwin’s three-point shot, with seven seconds left that finished the game with a win for CCOP 32-29. Godwin finished with five points and nine rebounds. The win advanced them to the final round of playoffs. West Coast Olympic Gymnastics Academy girls compete in SF

Frosh Falcons finish with 9-5 EBAL record

The Foothill High School boys freshman basketball team finished their season on a positive note by beating Amador Valley High School to earn Best of Pleasanton bragging rights.

Falcon defense smothered the Dons in the first quarter as they held Amador to only two first-quarter points, opening up a 10-2 lead. The Dons mounted a rally in the third quarter, managing to cut the lead to seven points (27-20) midway through the third, but the Falcons closed out the quarter on a 5-2 run, leading by 10 heading in to the final quarter.

Amador continued its rally in the fourth quarter, getting as close as five points but Chad Bianchi drilled a three-pointer from the corner off a nice assist from Stephen Ferrel, thwarting the Dons’ rally attempt. They closed the game with a 44-36 victory.

Bianchi led the team in scoring with 13 points, while Ferrel contributed eight points and pulled a team-high eight rebounds. Michael Udinski dropped in six points and Dejon Peirson pulled five rebounds.

In sweeping the two-game series against Amador, the victory gave the Falcons a final EBAL record of 9-5, putting them in the mix for second or third place with Granada High School in Livermore and/or Monte Vista High School in Danville. Foothill finished with an overall season record of 15-11 and recorded a 6-6 record in pre-season action.
