Five vehicles owned by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office were stolen Sunday morning from a parking garage in downtown Oakland, but all were recovered later that day, sheriff’s officials said.
Four of the vehicles were found at first following the burglary from the Alameda County Parking Garage at 165 13th St., which was discovered at about 7:15 a.m. by a sheriff’s office employee.
But one vehicle – an unmarked blue 2025 Ford Explorer – remained at-large into late Sunday afternoon, according to Sgt. Roberto Morales. The presence of emergency equipment on the missing vehicle led the sheriff’s office to advise caution to anyone approached by someone claiming to be law enforcement in a vehicle matching that description.
Morales said in an initial statement Sunday afternoon that the sheriff’s office did not have information that there was an “immediate threat” to the public but urged the public to remain “vigilant”.
“The Sheriff’s Office understands the concern that incidents involving stolen law enforcement vehicle may cause within the community,” he said. “We want to reassure residents that this case is being treated with the highest priority, and investigators are employing all available resources to recover the vehicles and ensure public safety.”
Within two hours of the first public statement, Morales confirmed the fifth and final vehicle was recovered. “Great update for all,” he said at around 4:20 p.m. Sunday.
Morales said he would share more details with the public about the thefts and their recovery when the information becomes available.
