The Pleasanton Planning Commission, as part of its consent calendar, is set to vote Wednesday on approving an application for a conditional use permit to allow a religious facility to operate with a maximum of 30 people at the Valley Business Park.
Items under consent are considered routine in nature and are typically approved by a single vote without much discussion.
According to the staff report, the applicant is seeking the conditional use permit for a religious facility located at 1069 Serpentine Lane. Online searches show that the Jain United Sangh of Bay Area (JUSBA) Jain Temple of Tri Valley is currently located at that site.
Jainism, according to the temple’s website, is a “transtheistic, which means it’s neither theistic nor atheistic” way of life where followers seek enlightenment through self improvement.
According to the staff report, the proposed religious facility would occupy 2,700 square feet of an existing suite at the building site and would serve as an indoor place of worship daily, with the largest gatherings taking place in the evenings between 6 and 9 p.m.
The maximum number of people on site at any one time — including staff and worshipers — would be 30, according to staff.
“As proposed and conditioned, staff concludes that the proposed use would be compatible with the surrounding businesses and would not detrimentally affect them,” according to the staff report. “Conditions of approval have been included to ensure the safety and general welfare of the surrounding area, and the City in general, are maintained.”
