A Fremont resident who had been reported missing nearly one week earlier was discovered dead inside a car recovered from a canyon below Calaveras Road south of Sunol on Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The decedent’s name has not yet been released, but the CHP confirmed they had been considered missing and at-risk out of Fremont since Feb. 21.
The discovery was made just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday when a bicyclist stopped and observed a gray Toyota Camry upside down approximately 100 feet below the roadway in a canyon along Calaveras Road west of Welch Creek Road, according to the CHP.
Alameda County Fire Department personnel arrived and rappelled down to find the driver deceased inside the vehicle, according to the CHP. When the car was recovered, officers confirmed the victim was the same person reported missing out of Fremont.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. There were no skid marks indicating where the car went off the roadway, according to the CHP.
Potential witnesses or anyone with information about the crash can contact the CHP-Dublin office at 925-828-0466.
