Real-time parking information for some of San Francisco’s streets is available starting today, marking a key phase of the city’s new parking program. Mayor Ed Lee and other city officials gathered at City Hall to celebrate.

SFpark, a two-year pilot project unveiled last year, starts today distributing real-time information collected by smart meters and sensors about where parking is available so that drivers can quickly find open spaces.

The information, which will only be for select neighborhoods being tested as part of the pilot program, will be available atwww.sfpark.org, or via an iPhone application being released Thursday, according to San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency officials.

The app is available in Apple’s iPhone App Store.

Lee, SFMTA Board Chairman Tom Nolan, SFMTA Executive Director Nat Ford, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, and other city officials were among the dignitaries who attended the 11 a.m. event at City Hall, which included a presentation of the new iPhone app.

SFMTA officials say the pilot program will help reduce the carbon footprint of the city’s drivers, who often have to circle around looking for spots, which wastes gas and increases pollution.

  1. They are trying so hard to soak the people with cars, while they offer no adequate alternative. Why would anyone shop or work there, when there are so many more friendly places?

  2. Saw this on the news last night (I think it was just last night?) and it is comical and ironic in that it is of course illegal to drive your car around looking for a parking spot AND use your handheld device so I guess you gotta pull over and park in order to use your i-phone app to find a parking place….ah, okay!! So far, only in San Francisco…you gotta love those SF values? Shop downtown Pleasanton…our parking problems pale!
