A personal flight from the Livermore Municipal Airport took an unexpected turn Wednesday afternoon when engine failure during the aircraft’s initial climb grounded the plane in a field shortly after take-off, according to a preliminary incident report by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The plane took off at around 1:30 p.m. (May 6) and landed approximately 2,000 feet southwest of the runway’s end, just north of West Jack London Boulevard — a distance measured via analysis of aerial footage recorded by KTVU.
The sole rider was not injured as a result of the incident, an FAA spokesperson said.
According to the FAA registry, the downed plane was a Cessna 170B, fixed-wing single engine plane manufactured in 1954 and registered solely to Justin M Bowen of Livermore.
The Livermore Police Department received a report of the downed plane at about 1:25 p.m., police said in a statement.
What followed was a “heavy police and fire response” as first responders assessed the scene, they added.
According to an FAA spokesperson, preliminary information is subject to change.
