Smith began work on May 20, according to an announcement from the city on Monday, taking the reins from now-assistant city manager Paul Spence, who held the position prior to his promotion to his current role late last year.

“I am incredibly excited to return to Livermore in this new capacity,” Smith said in the city’s announcement this week. “I look forward to collaborating with the community and my colleagues to make a positive and lasting impact.”

Smith began work as the city’s permit center manager in 2014 before being promoted to chief building official in 2016, then departing for a community development director role in Oakley two years ago.

“I am thrilled to welcome Brent back to Livermore,” City Manager Marianna Marysheva said in this week’s announcement. “His extensive experience and proven track record make him an invaluable addition to our executive team.”

Smith began his career in 1997 as a building inspector in Dublin following service in the U.S. Navy, later working as a deputy building official and chief building official in Oakley then returning to Dublin as parks and facilities development manager.

Livermore’s community development department consists of the building, engineering, housing and human services, and planning divisions.

“His dedication to public service, combined with his leadership skills and passion for fostering community improvement, will undoubtedly drive Livermore forward,” Marysheva said. “I am confident that Brent will bring a fresh perspective and a strong sense of collaboration to our team.”
