Three Dublin High School students have been recommended for expulsion and two others were suspended for their roles in a lunchtime brawl at the campus last month, according to district officials.

Dublin Unified School District Superintendent Chris Funk confirmed the news in a message to the school community on Monday but shared only limited information about the investigation into the Feb. 20 fight that locked down the campus and made headlines across the Bay Area.

“Following an investigation into the event and review of available evidence, three students have been recommended for expulsion. For confidentiality reasons, we will not be sharing the names of those students,” Funk wrote. “I want to be clear that the recommendation is just that, a recommendation.”

Funk also gave a rundown of the process ahead that “follows specific legal steps outlined in California Education Code” and includes an expulsion hearing typically before the Board of Trustees, the opportunity to appeal to the Alameda County Board of Education if affirmed at the district level and assignment to an alternative education program. Expulsions can be for a set timeframe or permanent.

“This process ensures due process rights for the student while maintaining school safety and discipline,” the superintendent said.

The altercation drew a crowd of 50 to 100 students and a police response to the student union at Dublin High after it broke out at around 11:50 a.m. Feb. 20, Dublin Police Services said in a press release at the time.

Arriving officers found three students involved in the fight, including one who briefly lost consciousness and another who was also taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. Police put the campus on lockdown for a portion of that afternoon.
