Farms, pirates, leprechauns, collages and gratitude are among the themes coming this year at the monthly preschool pre-literacy program offered by Pleasanton’s Museum on Main.
M.o.M.’s Reading Time, now in its 16th year, brings story and craft time for families with toddlers for free from 10-11 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. The initiative introduces youngsters ages 2 to 5 years old to reading and hands-on activities in a group setting and the chance to meet new friends.
“We aim for the reading time and craft-making to be a semi-structured, low-pressure learning experience for preschoolers,” said Rachel Brickell, the museum’s director of education and coordinator of the program. “Mostly, we want preschoolers and their families to feel comfortable in the museum and have fun learning in our space. We love to see these kids return for our third-grade programs and sometimes later as teen volunteers.”
The 2025 program kicked off with “Fish-tacular” last month, followed by “Valentine’s Day” this week. The rest of the dates and themes are “Tricky Leprechauns” (March 12), “Wondrous Weather” (April 9), “Create a Collage” (May 14), “On the Farm” (June 11), “Summer Fun” (July 9), “Ahoy, Pirates” (Aug. 13), “Flying in the Friendly Skies” (Sept. 10), “Halloween Haunts” (Oct. 8), “Giving Thanks” (Nov. 12) and “Holiday Cheer” (Dec. 10).
On event days, the book reading will begin promptly at 10 a.m. and craft time will follow immediately, museum officials said.
In addition to building the foundation for a lifetime of reading, the program hopes to encourage toddlers and their families to explore the museum, its exhibits and other offerings, officials said.
Admission is free, and donations are always appreciated, museum reps said. They are also actively looking for sponsors to keep the drop-in program free for all participants. More information is online at museumonmain.org or by phone at 925-462-2766.
