Though the Alameda County Fair is canceled this year due to the pandemic, live horse racing is back this summer — without fans in the stands — at the Pleasanton fairgrounds.
Opening last weekend, horse racing will be held Fridays through Sundays through July 26 with post time at 2:45 p.m. each day. The total prize money over the six weeks will be $2.3 million, with five stakes races totaling $200,000 in prize money.
Betting will be available through specified websites and apps only. Spectators are not allowed at the race track due to the county health order amid COVID-19, but the fairgrounds is opening outdoor patio dining at the Trackside Terrace for tables of up to six people with reservations and pre-order meals required.
Guests must wear face masks when not eating or drinking, and tables are set six feet apart to ensure physical distance requirements. As a precaution, any guest admitted at the Trackside Terrace will have to answer questions regarding their health and have their temperature taken with a touchless thermometer.
The stakes races are scheduled as follows: Oak Tree Sprint, $50,000 added (July 4); Jack Robinson Handicap, $8,000 guaranteed (July 4); Governor’s Handicap, $50,000 added (July 18); Arabian Stakes Race, TBD (July 18); and Everett Nevin Stakes, $50,000 added (July 25).
