Indivisible Tri-Valley plans to host a vigil in downtown Pleasanton on Tuesday evening to honor the memories of those killed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers or in ICE custody – during a time where any ICE presence, like reportedly occurred in Livermore over the weekend, can cause tension in communities across the country.
The progressive advocacy group called out the fatal shootings of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on July 7 in Houston and Colombian immigrant Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero on July 13 in Biddeford, Maine – both by ICE agents under disputed circumstances – as an impetus for the public vigil and march to city hall.
“Indivisible Tri-Valley will continue to support immigrants who are looking for a better life in America. We expect the Department of Homeland Security to adhere to the law and provide due process to all immigrants,” the organization stated.
The vigil, which will include a “singing resistance” and speakers from local clergy, is scheduled from 5:45-7 p.m. Tuesday (July 21) at Civic Park at 120 Main St., according to organizers.
The group then plans to walk to the nearby Pleasanton City Council meeting to urge stronger opposition from the city to potential for an ICE detention center in neighboring Dublin at the site of the shuttered federal women’s prison marred by a sexual assault scandal and serious disrepair.
With ICE becoming a lightning rod in America during President Donald Trump’s second term, the Tri-Valley was abuzz on Saturday morning when word spread on social media of ICE agents seen in the parking lot of Safeway on First Street in Livermore. The Alameda County Immigration Legal and Education Partnership later confirmed ICE was present but no arrests were reported.
