A 17-year-old boy from San Ramon was killed after moving on foot into a lane of Interstate 680 where he was struck by an SUV driving on the freeway early Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 27), with CHP units dispatched to southbound I-680 south of Crow Canyon Road on reports of an incident involving a pedestrian on the freeway, Officer Tyler Hahn said.

The first unit to arrive observed a pedestrian down in the No. 3 lane and a Subaru Crosstrek stopped on the freeway, according to Hahn. The teenager, whose name has not been released yet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial investigation indicates that the Crosstrek was traveling at approximately 60 to 65 mph when a pedestrian came onto the freeway from the right shoulder and into the SUV’s lane of travel, Hahn said.

The driver — a 63-year-old Richmond woman who has not been identified publicly — said she applied her brakes but the Crosstrek could not stop in time and hit the pedestrian, according to Hahn.

The crash remains under CHP investigation. Potential witnesses or anyone else with information related to what happened can contact the CHP Dublin Area office at 925-828-0466.
