The Oakland Athletics have brought Pleasanton native Stephen Piscotty back into their organization, inking the free agent outfielder this month to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Piscotty, 33, hasn’t played in the majors since the A’s released him midway through the 2022 season. He spent the rest of that year in the Cincinnati Reds’ organization, and received an invite to spring training with the San Francisco Giants heading into 2023 before ultimately getting released and playing a chunk of the season with a minor-league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
An Amador Valley High School alum (2009) who went on to star at Stanford University, Piscotty reached the majors in 2015 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was then traded to his hometown A’s after the 2017 season, with the Cardinals granting his request to be moved to a team closer to Pleasanton where his mother Gretchen was battling ALS.
The right-handed outfielder posted a strong season starting for the A’s in 2018, including an emotional home run in his first game back after his mom’s death that May. His remaining three-plus years with Oakland were up and down on the field, in part due to a string of injuries, before his release in August 2022.
Piscotty’s signing with the A’s was confirmed on the Major League Baseball transaction wire on Feb. 3.
