JV Dons cruise to 34-0 victory

The Amador Valley JV Dons used a balanced air and running attack, along with a dominating defense to cruise to a 34-0 victory over the Livermore Cowboys last weekend. Patrick Gibbons led the Amador offense, completing eight of 16 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. The game got away from Livermore in a hurry. With 3:15 still left on the first quarter clock, the Dons had a 21-0 lead and the game was pretty much in hand.

The scoring started on Amador’s first possession. Following a 26-yard pass from Gibbons to Alex Osterholt and 15-yard scamper by Chris Digangii, Osterholt ran around right end and scored from 25 yards out to put the Dons up 7-0. A big hit by Cameron Seams caused a Livermore fumble on the Cowboys’ first play from scrimmage and the Dons had the ball right back. The Dons wasted little time taking advantage of the turnover. On the next play, Gibbons found Osterholt behind the secondary for a 23-yard TD strike and a 14-0 Dons lead. After the Amador defense forced a Cowboys’ three-and-out, a big punt return by Osterholt was called back for holding. The penalty proved to be only a minor setback however. On Amador´s next play, Carson Ewanich took the hand off and sprinted untouched up the middle for a 64-yard touchdown to put the Dons up 21-0.

The Cowboys put together two fourth quarter drives, each of which got down the Amador 15-yard line. James Cook, Cameron Astiani, and Codey Heidebrecht took turns stopping three successive plays at the line of scrimmage to end the first drive.

Ewanich led Amador in rushing with 95 yards rushing on only four carries. Osterholt chipped in 59 yards on eight carries, and Digangii and additional 35 yards on four carries. Osterholt also chipped in three pass receptions for 87 yards.

Jags give Vikings first loss with 16-6 win

The Jaguars used a charged up defense and a pounding running game to knock the Vikings from the unbeaten ranks with a 16-6 win in Pleasanton Junior Football League JV action last weekend.

As was the case with the first game, Saturday was a battle between two very strong and hardworking teams. The Vikings had a 6-0 lead at the half, thanks to another sensational run from Michael White. But the Jags defense stepped up and stopped the conversion, keeping the deficit at six points. In the third quarter, the Jags defense held the Vikings, giving the ball back to the offense. From there, the Jags went to work behind quarterback Jack Moroney. Anthony Irizarry and Nick Reyes picked up some nice gains around the outside, with Moroney hooking up with Connor Caspersen for a big pickup down the right side, as the Jags moved inside the 5. Josh Miller found the end zone for the Jags with a burst up the middle and when Sean Thomas went in for the conversion, the Jags led 8-6 and would never trail again.

From there, the Jags defense, keyed by the play of lineman Logan McHone, Grant Chinn, Jack Ryan, Jack Murphy, Jordan Mast and Jon Poppe, linebackers Michael Coyle, Thomas and Zac Lander, as well as defensive backs Nate Patocchi, Broder Heggelund and Ben Bandurraga got it done. As the game wore on, the Jags offensive line of Aaron Banks, Jacob Blair, Jacob Wilson, JP Pasteur, Nick Pasteur, Chris Richter and Chase Barkdull kept pushing the Vikings defense backwards, taking precious time off the clock. Finally, Irizzary iced the game with a 30-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, with Thomas once again getting in for the conversion for the 16-6 final margin.

On second and 10, Austin Liscano ran for eight yards off of right guard and then Aaron Silva turned a short screen into a 12-yard gain to set up a first and goal at the Rams 10. The Raider D held the Broncos to 32 yards of offense ending the first half with the score 0-0. The third quarter belonged to the Raider Defense as LB Aaron Andrews forces a Bronco fumble recovered by LB Brandon Derdak. After the corner kick well executed by Hannah Jackson, Keli Wheatley headed the ball into the bar and over the goal line. In the second half it looked that Machine switched into the higher gear. Rage’s defense was on the top of its performance but after a corner kick and good save by Hannah Menk, the referees determined that the ball crossed the line. Another corner kick from the same side went on the second pole of the goal and the ball bounced of the defensive player into the goal. In the end, Castro Valley topped Rage 3-1.

The boys responsible for disrupting the opponent’s attack and feeding the offense are Matt Teng, Jack Geasa, Alex Lee, Chris Goldhawk, Joshua Cole and Ryan Vicencio. They’ve maintained a consistent defensive superiority even as substitutions are made throughout the game, performing numerous “clears” and “killed attacks” regardless of player participation or defensive alignment. Sam’s speed and agility allows him to intercept oncoming attacks and prevents many potential shots on goal. Sammy is a solid player at both ends of the field, whether playing offense or defense.
