With Stockton’s Bear Creek High on tap for tonight, the Amador Valley Dons hope to repeat last Friday’s win over Hayward High, making it their second victory of the 2007 season.
Nick Vuoto hauled in four touchdown passes for the Dons, who are beginning to fine-tune their passing attack in preparation for SRV and other upcoming EBAL games.
In front of a packed house at Amador, the Dons received the opening kickoff from the visiting Hayward Farmers. A methodical drive taking just less than two-and-a-half minutes was consummated by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Pat Espiritu to Vuoto. Dillon Mullaney’s extra-point was good, giving the Dons a 7-0 lead at the 9:34 mark of the first quarter.
Hayward looked like it was going to make a game of it as they returned the Amador Valley kickoff to their own 40-yard line, then connected on a 41-yard pass play to move the ball to the Dons’ 19-yard line. A 19-yard gallop ended the 33-second drive and made the score 7-6, still in favor of the Dons. The extra-point was blocked to keep the score 7-6.
The Farmers kicked off again, and once again the Dons moved the ball down the field relatively easily. At the 6:38 mark, JR Souza bulled his way for eight-yards and the Dons’ second touchdown of the game. The extra-point increased the Dons’ lead to 14-6.
The Farmers next drive was short, as they fumbled the ball back to the Dons on their first play. Amador Valley took over on the Hayward 35-yard line, and on first down, Espiritu once again connected with Vuoto for a touchdown over the Farmers’ defense. After the extra-point, the Dons had a 21-6 lead with less than a half-quarter gone in the game.
The Dons’ defense stopped the Farmers’ next possession and after receiving the Hayward punt began their fourth drive of the game. It looked liked the Dons were going to be stopped on downs at the Hayward 34-yard line when Pat Gondkoff took off on a fly sweep right. Surrounded by Farmers’ defenders, Gondkoff calmly stopped and tossed the ball downfield to a wide-open Vuoto for yet another Dons’ touchdown. Four possessions, four touchdowns, and four extra-points and the Dons had a 28-6 lead going into the half.
Not ready to call it a game, Hayward bounced back in the second half with a 32-yard field goal, cutting the Dons’ lead to 28-9. A 66-yard touchdown by Vuoto then gave Amador a 35-9 lead. In their next possession, the Dons once again moved down the field with ease, with a 66-yard drive and a touchdown by Kean Stancil and Mullaney’s sixth extra-point to put the Dons ahead 42-9. Another touchdown by SRV, but again no extra point, ended the game at 42-15 in favor of the Amador Dons.
Foothill tops Berkeley 30-7
The Foothill Falcons owned the field for most of last Friday’s game against the Berkeley Yellowjackets, as 200-pound senior fullback Rob Andrews came through with 157 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Despite turnovers early in the game, Foothill never let up as its strong defense held the Yellowjackets to 7 points.
Foothill plays Skyline Titans this afternoon
The Foothill High varsity football team takes on the Skyline High Titans at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon (Sept. 28) at Skyline’s Oakland campus.
The Falcons are hoping to repeat the outstanding performance they showed last week in defeating Berkeley High 30-7. In that game, Foothill owned the field for most of the game against the Yellowjackets, as 200-pound senior fullback Rob Andrews came through with 157 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Despite turnovers early in the game, Foothill never let up as its strong defense held the Yellowjackets to 7 points.
