Dominating is the best word to describe the performance of the Foothill Falcons last Friday against Berkeley. With a quick strike offense and suffocating defense, the visiting Falcons beat the Berkeley Yellowjackets 41-7 to continue their strong start to the season.
The Falcons’ defense did not allow Yellowjackets an offensive score. Playing what is fast becoming the teamís trademark–a hard hitting, ball hawking style–the defense allowed the Falcon offense to take advantage of several Berkeley mistakes. Through two games this season, the Falcon defense has allowed only three points.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Falcons took to the air for the first score of the game. Josh Mendonca hit Austin Day with a 25-yard pass play with 7:04 to go in the first quarter to give the Falcons the lead.
From that point forward, the defense made the night more miserable for Berkeley. The first Yellowjacket possession following the touchdown ended when Jordan Johnson intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards to the Yellowjacket 30-yard line. That turnover led to the first of two Adam Miles field goals to give the Falcons a quick 10-0 lead.
After the ensuing kickoff, the defense quickly got the ball back to the offense when Ryan Theige’s pancake hit of a Yellowjacket receiver resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Eric Gabbani at midfield. The Falcon offense was unable to convert when a Berkeley defender returned an interception for a score to make the game 10-7. That was as close as Berkley would get all night.
The starting offensive line of center William OíBrien, guards Tom Holmgren and Mitch DalPorto, and tackles Calvin Santos and Dan Williams, dominated the line of scrimmage. Berkeley was unable to apply any pressure on the Foothill quarterback all night and the running game had gaping holes through which to run.
The defense made sure there was no comeback in the second half. The turnovers kept coming and the offense–even with many starters giving way to reserves–kept putting the points on the board.
Along with his two field goals, place-kicker Miles split the uprights perfectly on all five PATs. Short touchdown runs from fullback Rob Andrews and sophomore Ryan Walsworth rounded out the scoring for Foothill.
AVHS Girls water polo overpowers Livermore in league opener
It wasn’t even close. The Matador Valley Girlís Varsity Water Polo team from the outset dominated offensively and defensively in its league-opening water polo game with Livermore, coming away with a 19-1 win.
In a game like this, everyone contributes. There was solid defense and goal tending as well as offensive firepower from goal scorers Allie Glogovac, Anais Flynn, Chloe Lowder, Danielle Desmet, Jenn Docto, Kristen Wilhelm, Marina Allen and Sarah Wetherell. Goalkeepers Alexa Davis and Caitlin Desmet did their part with numerous saves.
