The Pleasanton Phantom under-10 ‘B’ team took first place in the California Grapettes National Tune-Up tournament last weekend in Manteca. With the win the team is off to the ASA National Championships in St. Louis, Mo., scheduled for July 31 through Aug. 6.

In the championship game, Phantom beat San Jose Strikers 5-4 in a game decided by the international tiebreaker rules. In the last inning, with the Phantom down 4-1, Victoria Molina started a three-run rally with a single to centerfield. Krista Williams followed with a bunt hit that caused an overthrow that moved both runners into scoring position. With runners on second and third, Kendall Moore also bunted to score Molina and then Molly Phillips laid down a squeeze bunt to score Williams. Johanna Grauer then knocked in Moore to tie the game at 4.

In the international tiebreaker, a Kennedy Poplawski sacrifice that moved Malory Masajlo to third was followed by an RBI from Jana Johnson that plated Masajlo with what became the tournament-winning run. The game ended on a perfect throw from Masajlo in centerfield to home plate where Ashley Lotoszynski tagged out the runner for the game.

Phantom under-14 girls make it to semifinals of All American Classic

The Phantom under-14 fastpitch softball team made it to the semifinals of the All American Classic in Sunnyvale last weekend before falling to Santa Clara 5-2. The team benefited from individual standout performances in the qualifying games against teams from San Lorenzo, Belmont and Los Gatos. Macy Masaljo pitched beautifully, allowing only two walks in the 8-2 win against San Lorenzo’s Lady Patriots. Kim Grano, who later pitched against Belmont Blast, reached base safely in every at bat and wowed the crowd by beating a pick-off attempt to score a run. Janine Kaleppe’s aggressive base running highlighted the game against the Los Gatos Magic. Emma McGuinness and Syd Shaffer provided firepower against the Magic, each smacking a double. Chelsea King added a dose of excitement with a perfect suicide squeeze that resulted in a run and a base hit for King. Haley Douglas pitched a one-hitter in the 11-0 win over Los Gatos.

Del Prado Swims Past Dublin

The Del Prado Stingrays swam past the Dublin Green Gators 576-417 in the heat at the Dublin Pool. Del Prado Stingrays topped the Green Gators in a meet that featured several individual and team records. The top swimmers for the Stingrays were Alyssa Barkakos, Jillian Blandion, Megan Doi, Niki Doi, and Colleen Mayes, for the girls. The top Stingray Boys were Jake Bahls, Eric Gates, Alex Beatty, Jake Newman and Tommy Sabatini. Del Prado swimmers, Jake Bahls and Jake Newman, continued their record-setting ways. Bahls (B 13-14 50 Back) beat the 1998 backstoke record by swimming a team record 30.15, time and Newman (B 7-8 25 FLY) beat his previous team record that lasted only one meet when he swam a 19.82.

Four Runners Qualify for the Junior Olympics

The Pleasanton Heat Running Club has four runners who qualified for the Junior Olympics being held in Baltimore, Md., July 25-30. At the Region 14 qualifying meet, July 8 and 9, Theo Carter, age 11, placed first in the Midget Boys’ age group in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:51.00 and the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:25.00. Parker Deuel, also 11, qualified with a time of 4:51.33 in the 1500-meter run. Sean Colaco, age 13, placed first in the Youth Boys’ age group, with a time of 10:01.00 for the 3000-meter run. Colaco also qualified for the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:33.00 for the 1500. Brandon Richmond-Buccola, age 13, qualified in the 400 meter run with a time of 54.9.

Fall Ball Little League Program

Pleasanton American Little League is introducing a new fall baseball program designed to provide a superior baseball training and competitive, tournament-style baseball experience in the off-season. The program is scheduled to run for eight weeks beginning September 10. It will focus on ages 7-14.

The target for participation is 14 teams, broken down as follows:

* 2 Juniors Teams, ages 12-14

* 4 Majors Teams, ages 10-12

* 4 AAA Teams, ages 9-11

* 4 A/AA Teams, ages 7-9

There is limited availability. Every week (during weeks 2-7), each team will receive advanced training from a top instructor in one of the following areas:

* Hitting

* Base running

* Pitching and catching

* Infield/outfield fundamentals

* Team defense

Coaches will be actively involved in assisting the instructors with pre-defined drills and activities.

It is expected that everyone will be scheduled during the same four-hour time period each Sunday afternoon. The schedule has been developed to keep the kids moving, learning, engaged and having fun the whole time.

The league is looking for top coaches in the area to be a part of the fall program. In support of this, the league will waive the $100 (fall) registration fee for those sacrificing a family member’s time to manage or coach a team. In addition, a manager or coach’s participation in the fall program will be considered a big plus when being considered to manage or coach a regular season team.
