A reported mail theft in Danville last week gave way to a police pursuit that involved the assistance of a Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office helicopter, a freeway crash and ultimately the detention of two suspects, according to an announcement from the town this week.
The incident began just before 5 p.m. April 2 when DPD officers responded to reported mail theft on Meadowbrook Lane, after which police said they promptly located and attempted a traffic stop on the suspects’ vehicle.
“The driver refused to yield, leading officers on a pursuit where Sheriff’s Office helicopter STARR 3 was overhead to assist,” town officials said in a press release Wednesday.
That pursuit concluded when the suspects’ vehicle collided with another vehicle on I-680 and they were detained by officers with DPD, CCSO and California Highway Patrol.
“Great police work by all law enforcement agencies involved in bringing this incident to a safe resolution and helping protect our community,” said Danville Police Chief Thomas Rossberg in the town’s press release.
The two suspects were booked into the Martinez Detention Facility after receiving hospital clearance. Police said they recovered 100 pieces of stolen mail in the vehicle from more than 20 victims.
In addition to mail theft and conspiracy charges, the driver of the vehicle is facing charges for providing a false ID to police and drug paraphernalia possession.
