A big-rig caught fire on southbound Interstate 680 in the Sunol area on Monday morning, causing traffic impacts that extended into the afternoon.
The fire – which was first reported at around 4:30 a.m. – was out by 6 a.m. but the two right lanes remained closed on the freeway near Sheridan Road throughout the morning commute as authorities worked to clear the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.
It proved a complicated cleanup effort with the Target-branded truck. “Because the trailer is compromised from the fire, crews have to offload before the truck/trailer can be moved,” CHP officials said.
The work was done and lanes reopened at around 2:15 p.m., according to the CHP.
