A man suspected of killing a woman in Pleasanton has died on Thursday following a standoff with police on westbound Interstate 580 in San Leandro, police said.

According to the Pleasanton Police Department, the case is being investigated as a murder-suicide after the suspect — whose name has not been made public — was found dead in his vehicle from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Pleasanton Police Department did not use any lethal force during this incident,” Teri Yan, PPD’s community and public relations coordinator, told the Weekly.

PPD stated in a press release on Thursday that a woman was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside a house on Saginaw Circle at around 11:10 a.m. The residence was in the Las Positas Gardens townhouse development.

A suspect was then seen driving away and an unmarked PPD unit followed the car onto I-580 going westbound, according to the department. Officers followed the suspect’s vehicle before it “became disabled” in the area of I-580 and Benedict Drive in San Leandro, police said.

Several surrounding police agencies including California Highway Patrol, San Leandro Police Department, and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist PPD, which turned into a standoff.

Officers attempted to communicate with the suspect but noticed there was no movement coming from inside the vehicle. After approaching the suspect’s car, they discovered he had died.

It has not been immediately made known if the suspect was a Pleasanton resident.

CHP has not confirmed whether any lanes will be closed as police investigate. As of Thursday afternoon, lanes going both ways on I-580 appear to be open but with moderate to heavy traffic in the area where the standoff occurred, according to Google Maps.

“This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to our community,” PPD stated. “The department is still in the early stages of this investigation, and anticipates providing more information within the next 24 hours.”
