The Pleasanton Community of Character Collaborative is gearing up to host its annual barbecue and auction fundraising event this month, which raises money for the Juanita Haugen Memorial Scholarship fund.
The fund is used as a way to honor the legacy of Haugen, the late community leader and former school board trustee, by recognizing several Pleasanton Unified School District high schoolers for their civic engagement and their “exceptional character by role modeling the traits of compassion, honesty, respect, responsibility, integrity, and self-discipline”.

“If you read some of the bios of these kids it’s just amazing what some of them have done,” Ken Mano, the scholarship committee chairman for the collaborative, told the Weekly.
Mano said that in the past, the collaborative mainly only gave out two scholarships — one for each comprehensive high school in the city. But ever since the collaborative began hosting the barbecue fundraiser a few years back, he said that the number of scholarships has grown.
According to the collaborative’s website, there were nine seniors from the class of 2025 who received a scholarship thanks to the money raised from the annual barbecue and auction. Mano said the fundraising event raised around $23,000 last year.
“We’re just trying to increase the number of scholarships we’ve been giving out and we’ve been fortunate to be able to do that over the last two years,” Mano said.
This year’s fundraiser is set for 5 p.m. next Saturday (Aug. 16) at the home of Pleasanton City Councilmember Craig Eicher. Tickets are $100 per person and are available at the Community of Character website.
All of the ticket prices, as well as proceeds from auction items that evening, will go directly to the scholarship fund. Some of the items organizers said are being auctioned this year include golfing with the mayor at Castlewood, golfing at Ruby Hill, a four-night stay in an Airbnb house in Arnold, several wine tastings at local wineries, tickets to the San Francisco Symphony and many themed baskets.
