Officials and community leaders in San Ramon are putting the finishing touches on plans to celebrate a major anniversary of the city’s incorporation later this year, marking the 40th year since the move was approved by voters in July 1983.
Four decades ago, the incorporation measure was passed by San Ramon voters — one year after incorporation efforts were successful in neighboring Danville. This year’s celebrations are set to harken back to the city’s early days, with 1980s-themed celebrations set to crop up throughout this month in the growing city that generally prides itself on looking toward the future.
“San Ramon is excited to be remembering the past, celebrating the present, and looking forward to the future,” said Brad Morris, the city’s parks and community services division manager. “We really feel like the city’s grown over the last 40 years, and there’s no better way to celebrate it than with these events.”
The first anniversary event this year is the next installment of the Dive In movie series at the city’s Olympic Pool and Aquatic Park at 9900 Broadmoor Drive at 7 p.m. on Friday (Aug. 4).
While the film — “Top Gun: Maverick” — was released last year, Morris noted that the sequel to the 1986 original film was aimed at bringing present-day audiences back in time to the 1980s and paying tribute to the original.
Anniversary festivities will resume shortly after, with the final installment of the Concerts in the Park series featuring 1980s tribute band Fast Times on Sunday (Aug. 6) in the Central Park Amphitheater at 12501 Alcosta Blvd. at 5:30 p.m.
Later next month, anniversary celebrations will culminate with a formal gala on Aug. 25.
“We’ll be doing citizen stories at City Hall, with hors d’oeuvres that will kick off the event, and then we’ll be doing a formal dinner at the Community Center with dancing to the ’80s and dessert and coffee,” Morris said.
Tickets and more information about the gala are available online.
