A teenage cyclist is in critical but stable condition after being struck by a vehicle in northern Pleasanton on Tuesday night.
Pleasanton police and the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department both responded to a collision at the intersection of Santa Rita Road and Rosewood Drive at approximately 6:37 p.m.
According to officials, the bicyclist, 13, was traveling northbound along Santa Rita and then “was struck by a vehicle turning southbound onto Santa Rita Road from Rosewood Drive.” Officials said the bicyclist “sustained major injuries and received immediate medical attention” before being transported to a hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition.
The driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation. Officials added alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the collision, and that the identities of the involved parties are not being released at this time.
The Pleasanton Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating the collision. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the PPD at 931-5100.

It was a sad accident which I happened to be around few minutes after the fact.
I must point out that I have already contacted the city to help prevent exactly this type of incident. The problem is that cyclists mostly use the side-walk on the wrong flow of traffic northbound of Santa Rita Rd. That is not only dangerous for pedestrians but also for cyclists themselves because drivers won’t have a good vision and expectation of their path.
I guess I don’t understand. If he was on the sidewalk why was he hit by the car? My heart hurts for him and his family.
