The city of Livermore will not be hosting its annual Fourth of July fireworks display this year.
Officials said the city made the decision earlier in the year in an effort to prioritize the community’s health and safety at a time when there were still many unknowns.
However, officials said the city is looking forward to bringing the event back in 2022.
In light of the display’s cancellation, the Livermore Police Department shared a post on social media reminding residents that the individual use of fireworks is prohibited in Livermore.
The post reads, “Summer doesn’t seem quite right without our Annual 4th of July Celebration, right?! Unfortunately, many perceive the cancellation of professional firework shows to be an invitation to create their own entertainment. Over the past several weeks L.P.D. has seen a large influx of illegal fireworks calls and would like to remind everyone of the inherent dangers of discharging such explosives and the distress it can cause to our veterans and pets.”
The police department’s post also notes that all fireworks, including those classified as “Safe and Sane,” are illegal in Livermore and violators are subject to a fine and could face jail time.
The department suggests some safer, alternative ways to celebrate such as water balloon fights, confetti poppers, silly string, pinatas and bubbles or glow sticks.
