A year after COVID-19 brought many things to a halt, the Sunol Visitor Center is now open to the public with limited capacity and resumed programming earlier this month.

“The Sunol Visitor Center has a gopher snake, California toad, northern pacific rattlesnake, western pond turtle, and tarantula on display,” East Bay Regional Park District spokesman Dave Mason told the Weekly about the current attractions.

Educational exhibits include “a large park district map and graphic panels showing directions and information about Flag Hill and Little Yosemite,” Mason said. Other maps, brochures and information will be available outside the visitor center, as well as seed starter and pollinator craft kits for wildflower season (while supplies last).

All of the district’s visitor centers have strict safety protocols in effect, including hand sanitation and mandatory face masks. No reservations are required though access to the exhibits may be limited due to capacity restrictions.

The Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve and backpack camping are also open right now, though parking is limited at the preserve and fills early on the weekends, and visitors may be advised to come back later.

The Sunol Visitor Center is open Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Camping reservations can only be made by calling 888-327-2757, option 2, from Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
