Young learners attended their first day back at Dublin Unified School District on Thursday, one year and five days after closing to shelter in place during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The district’s phased reopening for hybrid learning started with the return of students in preschool, kindergarten and development kindergarten. Though high fives were out of the question, colorful signs and a walkway of balloons greeted students returning to Dublin and Amador Elementary.

Both students and staff wore mandatory face masks — some with positive messages — and maintained social distancing, sitting spaced apart at desks and in lines.

Students in hybrid in-person learning will attend on site four days a week; Wednesdays are reserved as a full remote day for all students.

On days when students are attending class in-person, they will be divided into morning and afternoon schedules, with some attending earlier in the day and others later on.

California public schools are required by the state to offer the option of remote learning for families who wish to continue to do so. According to DUSD, most families have chosen the remote option for the rest of the school year.

The current timeline for other DUSD students has first through fourth grade set to return on Monday (March 22), followed by fourth through fifth grade on March 29, and middle and high school students targeted for March 29. Officials are still working to develop a schedule that will allow secondary students to move among multiple classrooms safely during the school day.
