Pleasanton Unified School District is set to update its organizational work plan and governance handbook during a special Board of Trustees online workshop on Thursday (Jan. 21), starting 5 p.m.
There are no other items on the meeting agenda, which includes a presentation and board discussion, nor will a public hearing be held that evening.
Staff will cover five goals under the district’s organizational work plan, which acts as a guide for district-wide planning when it comes to goals and will “serve as the primary evaluation metrics for the executive leadership team and inform their annual reviews.”
The five organizational goals continuing for the 2020-21 school year involve closing achievement gaps, improving student interventions, bolstering district policies and procedures, enhancing employee recruitment, development and retention strategies, and improving customer satisfaction and strategies for stakeholder engagement.
Each goal also lists a subset of key objectives, key performance indicators, and specific actions to fulfill. For example, the top listed goal calls for PUSD to “leverage personalized learning strategies and growth assessments to close achievement and opportunity gaps, as evidenced by CAASPP, district assessments and other metrics.”
One proposed action for achieving that involves using MAP Growth assessments in grades 2 to 8 for math and grades 3 to 8 in reading to ensure students are reaching academic goals. By June, the district is hopeful “at least 80% of students in 2nd grade in math and 3-8 grade in reading and math will reach their goals as measured by MAP Growth assessment results.”
The district also wants to develop a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) for student attendance and engagement “by creating positive school and classroom environments.”
One key performance indicator the district will use to measure success in that area is maintaining high daily attendance rates of 95% or greater for all school days at quarterly reporting periods. By June, PUSD also aims to increase peer educators in their Tobacco Use Prevention Education program by 10%.
The governance handbook — which outlines the board’s roles and responsibilities as well as protocols for situations like voting during meetings and addressing public concerns — was last updated in November 2018.
A draft version includes basic revisions such as current district demographics and the newest board members names on the title page, but is otherwise the same document as two years ago.
A section on PUSD governance protocols was also reformatted “to improve content flow,” including titles added or moved for clarity, and a governance calendar for annual tasks such as approving course outlines and accepting audit reports is still pending.
