Pleasanton’s Foothill High School was searched by police and cleared of danger Friday morning after a phone call alerting authorities to a threatening social media post was soon determined to have actually pertained to a different Foothill High School.
“While this turned out not to be a local threat, we’re grateful to the PPD and commend school administrators and front office staff for their quick response. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we take these situations very seriously,” Pleasanton Unified School District spokesman Patrick Gannon said.
In a week when school safety is on minds across the country (following Wednesday’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., during which 17 people were killed), the situation unfolded in Pleasanton around 8:45 a.m. Friday.
Foothill High received an anonymous phone call regarding a Snapchat post that allegedly showed bullets on campus, according to Gannon.
School officials immediately called Pleasanton police, who responded, searched the Foothill Road campus and found no immediate threat, Gannon said.
Upon further investigation, Gannon said, authorities determined the Snapchat post and tip call actually related to Foothill High School in Bakersfield.
23ABC News Bakersfield reported on Friday that their community’s Foothill High had an increased police presence after bullets were found in a bathroom sink at that campus.
Meanwhile in Pleasanton, Foothill principal Sebastian Bull sent an email to parents later Friday morning alerting them to the investigation and determination the threat wasn’t directed to the Pleasanton school.
He said students and families should reach out to school staff and counselors for support if needed Friday.
“We encourage you to speak with your students regarding responsible use of social media and the real consequences that can result from its misuse,” Bull added. “It also continues to be important that if you or your child(ren) view any similar posts regarding any alleged threat, to report it to the Police Department and/or a school administrator.”

Thank God, this was not a real threat, but congratulations to the school authorities for reacting so fast and showing by example that any and every threat to our schools will be taken seriously and violators will be dealt with in a very serious manner.
Thank you PPD for responding to this as if it was a life & death matter, especially what happened this week at M.S.D H.S in Flordia.
In the H.S in Flordia this week, FBI and others (school superintendents) who pretend they care should stop saying “if you see or hear something report it” if they are not going to execute the action to protect lives.
It’s not going to stop if we don’t resolve the system failure to execute a plan against those who are a threat, In addition, create legislation with State and Federal platforms that not only protects the person reporting the risk information but also give local authorities the freedom to take swift action.
The current system is too politicized from our State legislative leaders on gun control and not using common sense on what to do when a school and many children are alerted to a problem. In many cases, the solution is very obvious, but people are afraid to step out.
Too many people are afraid they will be sued so they fail to take immediate action.
Especially if you’re in a state like California, where nothing is as important as an individual’s personal feelings and you can’t legislate anything to protect against deranged mental people who are a true risk to the community.
People who are going to use assault weapons will always find a way to get them or another homemade device that causes injury and death.
Congress and State representatives, “Quit using Band-Aids (Gun Control), in place of a tourniquet (Authority Protection) for protecting our schools. Think about it, when you have a sign up that says there are no guns on this property, a mentally corrupt person going to feel safe and see it as an easy target.
We must send the message loud and clear, our schools and other public places will have people ( teachers & support administrators) on location that are armed with concealed weapons and trained and will protect our children and teachers.
If we do this with Air Marshalls on our planes (20 years ago) why has it taken so long to implement in the truly vulnerable areas like the 16 schools that these terrible disasters have hit in the last 12 months?
It’s true everybody’s our hearts go out to the families, and our prayers will be with those who lost their lives.
It now the time for the politicians, to hold accountable for those officials who made mistakes and replace them with people who will give their life before another child dies in our schools. And not worry about who is going to get in trouble for ( taking protective action) doing the wrong thing!
This has been a problem for over 8 years, why has it taken so long; don’t let this horrible incident wind up in our rearview mirrors like we did with the last 15 deadly school incidents.

@JPL, You are absolutely clueless. As a teacher, I have no desire to be armed at school. You actually think that in the chaos of a situation like this a teacher is going to somehow effectively shoot the kid with the gun without killing other kids in the sidelines? You really think the answer to bullets flying around a school is to just add more guns and bullets flying around? Our police and military who receive extensive and regular training don’t even get this right all of the time. Also, if teachers have guns within reach if a situation like this arises, how do you keep kids from getting them?? This is real life, not a video game. Yes, mental health services is a huge problem, and we need more funding to adequately address and follow up on this for all. Also, free availability of guns, especially assault rifles is a huge problem. They both equally need to be addressed. There is no reason for anybody to have assault rifles. I’m going to listen to the people that were there in Parkland and Sandy Hook. They want assault rifles banned. You weren’t there, so sit down.

I agree with you. Don’t think you should have a gun either. You don’t sound to grounded. I agree with the writer above and would like to have professional assets on campus just walking around in uniform and armed. That is the way to do it. Mental health information should be furnished when buying a weapon. Lots more lethal weapons available other than an assault weapon. Very few of you even understand what they do and how they work.
America today has the technology, the expertise and the systems already available that will detect, and prevent, if necessary, take out or disable potential shooters threatening innocent life’s.
Video surveillance is every where, breed that with facial recognition and precision laser to determine if an armed individual is friend or foe.
Friend would be law enforcement, or licensed carriers, foe would be anyone armed with a weapon and not recognizable as law enforcement, or licensed carrier through facial recognition .
Precision laser robots can be placed at strategic locations, such as schools, churches, government institutions, large public gatherings, using facial recognition can detect, prevent and if necessary take out, or disable potential threats before law enforcement can arrive, in order to save life’s.
