A motorcyclist was killed on Interstate 580 in Livermore this weekend in a crash involving two motorcycles and a pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 3 p.m. Saturday, one of the motorcycles was traveling in the fast lane at speeds in excess of 90 mph when it suddenly went all the way over to the slow lane, according to CHP spokesman Derek Reed.
The person riding the motorcycle lost control, swerved into the No. 4 lane and rear-ended a GMC Sierra, Reed said.
The motorcycle then ended up back in the slow lane where it caused another motorcyclist to lose control and crash.
The rider of the motorcycle that collided with the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene and the other rider was taken to a trauma center with major injuries, Reed said.
No other injuries were reported.
The collision resulted in the closure of three of the freeway’s five eastbound lanes. The lanes were reopened to traffic one-by-one over a period of a few hours. All lanes were open to traffic by about 6 p.m.

What a totally avoidable tragedy.
I’ve been rear ended by more motorcycles than cars.
These terrible accidents will keep happening till we ban motorcycle lane splitting, hold the big rigs to 55mph while using 2 right hand lanes only and somehow enforce no cellphone use in vehicles while enforcing speed limits and tailgating. How about forgetting about Moonbeams train to nowhere and use the money for beefing up the understaffed CHP.
Another lesson in humility. You tell these motorcycle guys that one day they will get killed, and or kill someone. They will tell you that’s their right. Well your right just cost the taxpayer a lot of money and over time for the CHP, and coroner. Lets not forget all the people stuck in traffic. The ramifications went well beyond one motorcycle riders poor decisions. Some call California a nanny state, but with this kind of crap how can we not be.
Reckless driving is the issue, not lane splitting.
Want to change the status quo, change the requirements and cost to get a license. Germany got driving right.
Oh but then its unfair to immigrants and the financially disadvantaged.
I don’t understand the lane switching..sounds like THIS rider had some issues!!! Actually, we have EMPTY far left lanes sitting idle most of the time. They should be used safely by motorcycles when open.!!!!! Save time, money, and lives… for ALL drivers. Just too logical and practical to be considered, I suppose. Every driver should appreciate that if it were not for those motorcycles, they would be cars, clogging PARKING lots, onramps, and more potholes for the governor to ignore…etc, etc
