Unemployment rates rose in July in the Bay Area and statewide, even as the national unemployment rate declined, state officials said Friday.
The jobless rate in California increased to 8.7 percent in July from 8.5 percent in June, according to a report released by the California
Employment Development Department.
That rate remains significantly below that of July 2012, when it stood at 10.6 percent.
In the Bay Area, where unemployment in most counties remains below the state average, unemployment rates also rose from June to July.
San Francisco saw a small increase from 5.8 to 5.9 percent, and Marin County, which typically has the lowest unemployment rate in California, rose from 5.1 to 5.3 percent.
East Bay and North Bay counties saw slightly larger jumps, with Alameda County rising from 7.4 to 7.8 percent, Contra Costa County from 7.3 to 7.7 percent and Sonoma County from 6.7 to 7.1 percent.
Solano County, which continues to hold the highest unemployment rates in the Bay Area, had its rate jump from 8.2 to 8.5 percent.
The national unemployment rate declined to 7.4 percent in July, officials said.

Keep voting for the democrats.
I’ve got an idea. Let’s make things really easy for capital. Create an economic climate where the Dow climbs from 8,000 to 15,000 in four short years. Surely, then, capital will take its profits and expand its productive capacities and hire more workers. What? It’s paying cash for low-priced houses instead? But, wait, what about our job-creating heroes? Where is their heroism? Oh, I see. That was just a ruse fostered by capital and its puppeteers in their efforts to make capital seem more humane than the workers it routinely exploits? Drat! Fooled again!
Yes, Bay Area 2,300 NET LOSS for JULY… CoCo Times, 16th or 17th, George Avalos did an in-depth report on the 2,300 NET job loss in just the Bay Area (I emailed him with a Sonoma Co question, he had partial info, but Sonoma Co was not included in article)..
I SO appreciated G Avalos article reporting ‘NET’. I’m sick of the misleading half-truths, some report number of jobs gained, being only half the story. NET is ALL that really matters…the final, corrected, net result. I say corrected, because most months, a ‘corrected’ report quietly slips in the next month.
In addition to easy capital (free money from Bernanke) to give the illusion of a growing economy, let’s create an environment where median income is 8.1 percent lower than 2007, 46.2 million Americans living in poverty the largest number in 53 years of poverty measurements, Food Stamp recipients grew from 31.7M in 2008 to 47.5M in April 2013… an environment where those who dropped out of the labor force increased from 462,000 annually in 2008 to 909,000 in 2012, where 7 out of 8 jobs created since 2009 (88%) were part time jobs, home ownership is currently at an 18 year low, student loan debt increased 125% since 2009, price of gasoline has increased 100% since 2009, the national debt has increased 50% since 2009 from $11.7T to $18.2T… Drats fooled again!!!
Yes, the lax regulation of banking during the Bush administration, starting up of two unnecessary wars, has put us in a real hole. And yet capital goes to market and cleans up. Go figure!
And what is it doing with its stupendous new wealth? Is it hiring more domestic labor? Nope. The job creating heroes have decided that it’s better for the country if they go into housing markets for purposes of renting, and thus more profit. And how is this improving the economy?
I’ve got an idea. Let’s blame everything on America’s workers. Because capital can do no wrong, right?
Reno
you are so very right. I cannot believe we like Abe Lincoln, Franklin D. Rosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson even though they all engaged us in wars we had to dig out of. Get a life and realize that our President is a joke and that is the reason no one listens to him anymore and also Hilliary is running so hard against his record. He is just a joke.
Wow, I bow to the intelligence of the above poster hmmmmmm, the pride of all of Pleasanton. He’s very smart and acts as a model all your children should be striving to emulate. Yee-up. Really. Wow. With mental power like hmmmmmm’s, your kids will do really well. Really. I mean it. Really.
“Yes, the lax regulation of banking during the Bush administration”
Really the whole financial services industry.
The Clinton administration did as badly as Bush. Obama did little to fix things.
At least LuvPleasanton gets it.
Luv and Yup get it. Obama took the oath, then gave the order for Pelosi’s team to start working on health care for the ghetto. They came up with 2,000 plus pages of doing and undoing health care as we knew it. Now middle-class are going to pay considerably more, but at least the ghetto will be eligible for insurance and we’ll subsidized it for them. We were paying thru medi=cal for them before,…without altering ours. Now our 20 & 30 year old kids have been assigned with picking up the tab for medi-CARE seniors and the ghetto. The lives of our kids are being destroyed. They’ll never know the lives we had.
And, while focusing on new insurance, he ignored JOBS. Then everybody (except public unions) went on furlough pay, or lost their jobs. Obama never bothered with the unemployment mess, which only got worse!
It needed attention on 2009, but it has never been on Obama’s radar,
Even “Bono” when he is not meeting with Castro and Hugo Chavez admits true Capitalism is the ONLY way to prosperity and to lift the poor into the middle class … listen to this speech he gave at Georgetown University August 13, 2013… every once in awhile even liberals have to tell the truth – http://youtu.be/LDEjz3cXEJE
Based on all the posts that have been removed, it sounds like someone has struck a cord with reno911.
Luvpleasanton laid it all out the facts and stats for reno to consume, but failed to understand. One omission from the facts leading to the poor employment and underemployment situation is obamacare, specifically the fact that the exhorbitant costs for subpar coverage paid by employers of full time employees is forcing employers to reduce workers numbers and hours. Reno, that is directly related to your dear leader’s desire to take over the nations healthcare industry from the private sector. Another obama failure…what an amateur.
right, is SO right. I watch all, but I am not one of those PW trashers. However, with 4 of my above comments removed, my eyes have been opened to some extreme partisan censorship. My opening 2 were sharing relevant unemployment numbers, but were pulled with no reason given. The 3rd & 4th had some mild issue partisanship, but relevant..PW pulled as irrelevant. Purely censorship and selective issue cleansing.
Interesting Reno’s political trash is accepted as factual.
My first two comments with numbers were supporting the above article of percentages. Odd there would be an unemployment dispute, since it is or has affected most families in recent years. I’ll share again.
Comments were OK for days, then not so. Must have received political pressure to tighter censoring and stricter issue cleansing.
Again I just now checked the online version of Times. Not called ‘digital’, but the EXACT photo visual of each page, called “e-Edition”. . (by subscription) (of course google works for most past papers).
Saturday, Aug 17, front page, immediately below the Contra Costa Times, the bold headline “Recovery in jobs is set back”. Immediately below is SUB-title, Bay Area Loses 2,300 NET positions in July in south, east regions.. (a solid, relevant reference)
The closing paragraph “East Bay’s big losses were professional, scientific, and tech services, 1,700; leisure, hotel, and restaurants, 900.
For me, this article is more relevant than most hyped articles. This is more factual precisely because it reports NET losses. which is all that really matters.
I was also censored when providing a link to “Bono” (the celebrated socialist) espousing Capitalism as the ONLY answer to lifting the poor into the middle class at a recent Georgetown University speech – http://youtu.be/LDEjz3cXEJE … seems to me this is totally related to increasing employment … Wow
The only real number I care about is how many people will continue to patronize the saloon where I practice my chemistry, part-time, because the job creators don’t appreciate my skills as barte– I mean chemist.
The 4th removal is where I mentioned Obama’s focus was health care from Inauguration day. I guess that hit a partisan nerve, missing my point. That early focus was at the expense of dealing with JOBS. The ‘net’ result is FIVE years later, professionals suffered large job losses in JULY!!!! The pain and losses continue. Unemployment destroys families and eliminates retirements of 50 & 60 year old ‘boomers’. Those losses will still be hanging over them in 20 years.
That time lost in the beginning was critical and fatal. Choices.
Well! If Bono says capitalism is good then it must be. Ted Nugent says so too. So does Dennis Miller. And Sarah Palin. And so many more of the world’s great intellects. You can go all the way back to George Washington who decided to hand over New York to the Brits because the city was nothing more than an elite haven for anarchist liberal socialists.
Thank you LuvPleasanton/watcher/right/hmmmm/John/Bob/yup and all the other names you’ve been posting under today. I’m going to mix a few chemicals and drink to your gumption, transparent as it may be!
