Former San Ramon Mayor Abram Wilson said he is no longer in San Ramon’s mayoral race, allowing Mayor Bill Clarkson to seek re-election unopposed.
Wilson said he backed out of the race because the cost of challenging the city’s policy on mayoral terms would be too high.
Article III of the city’s charter states, “No elected mayor shall serve for more than four two year terms or eight years total.”
Wilson termed out two years ago after serving as mayor in 2002 when it was a rotating role on the City Council and as elected mayor from 2003 to 2011.
“There would have to be some sort of litigation and I’m not willing to have the city go through that and waste money,” Wilson said. “When the residents obviously want to do that, they could use other means.”
Although he initially did not want to run, Wilson said he considered a bid for the mayor’s slot after receiving calls from residents asking him to enter the race. Wilson added that he originally pulled papers to show Clarkson that he and other residents were “dissatisfied with his performance.”
Wilson cited the city’s decision to bow out of Tri-Valley Community Television and switch council meetings to Contra Costa television, as well as ending its contract with lobbyist group Jordan and Associates, as major areas of concern during Clarkson’s tenure as mayor. The best way to show displeasure with Clarkson is to not vote for him, Wilson noted.
“I love being a resident, that to me is the most powerful entity in the city,” Wilson said. “I can express my displeasure with a lot of things that (Clarkson has) done.”
Wilson said he will not run for one of two City Council seats, noting that throwing his hat in the ring would split the ticket.
“I believe that we have individuals that are running for City Council that will do a good job and I would not like to take votes away from those that I think will do a good job,” he said.
Incumbent Dave Hudson, attorney Thomas von Thury, Planning Commissioner Harry Sachs and Rene Matsumoto, past PTA president and education advocate, have filed papers to run. Because incumbent Jim Livingstone decided not seek re-election, the deadline to file papers to run for a seat on City Council has been extended until 5 p.m. today.
