Tea dance replaces 580/680 Senior Games
Without enough participants, organizers decided to cancel the long-planned 580/680 Senior Games, the Olympic-style competition was intended to help connect local seniors. Instead, the Pleasanton Senior Center, located at 5353 Sunol Blvd., will host a ballroom dance event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Music will be provided by Geri Foley. Tickets are $5. Call 931-5372.
County offers youth leadership program
High school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for Youth Leadership 2008, a five-session program on Saturday mornings focusing on leadership and local government put on by Alameda County. Session dates are Oct. 18, Nov. 15, Dec. 20, Jan. 10 and Jan. 31. Applications are due Oct. 1 and can be obtained by calling 510-272-6984 or visiting www.acgov.org.
Library hosts fall book sale
The biannual Friends of the Pleasanton Library book sale is back Sept. 26 to 28 at the library, 400 Old Bernal Ave. Books of all genres will be on sale, as well as collectibles, videos, CDs, cards, bookmarks and more. Most paperbacks will be 50 cents and most hardbacks are $1. From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Friends members get first dibs on the items. The public is then welcome from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Friends memberships are $10 and can be purchased at the sale. Proceeds benefit the library.
Red Cross needs blood donors
Once again the American Red Cross faces a blood shortage and is seeking Bay Area donors. Currently, the supply is a little more than half of what patients and hospitals need.
