It’s decoration time in the Tri-Valley, with two of the most popular home displays exemplifying the excitement of the season throughout the region.

Celebrating its 41st year illuminating Hillcrest Avenue in Livermore, Deacon Dave’s is appearing this week on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” — a reality competition show that is no stranger to the Tri-Valley, featuring Pleasanton’s Widmer World nearly a decade ago.
“I and my team of volunteers are excited to be one of the Christmas displays featured on the show. Win or lose, it was a fun experience. This year’s display is different than last year when they filmed,” Rev. Deacon Dave Rezendes told the Weekly on Tuesday.
The popular display of Christmas lights and decorations, which opened for the season on Saturday night, turns on around this time of year at Rezendes’ private residence, dubbed Casa del Pomba (The House of the Dove). The theme for the 2024 presentation is “The World Celebrates Christmas”.
“This year’s display is also outstanding,” said Rezendes, who is a Roman Catholic permanent deacon assigned to St. Michael Parish. “Team members are volunteers from all faiths, or no faith. If they have a passion for Christmas like me then they join Deacon Dave’s team.”
The Deacon Dave’s episode of “The Great Christmas Light Fight” is airing this Thursday (Dec. 5) at 9 p.m. on ABC 7.

In 2015, the TV show highlighted Widmer World from Chelsea Court in Pleasanton, which is known for its facade display as well as walk-through to the backyard.
“The front yard features computerized Christmas trees, lighted animals and a huge sleigh for family photos,” organizers said. “The backyard is filled with displays and collections, including Santas, Mickeys, princesses, nutcrackers, trains, villages, a fairground, Snoopys and many others. It’s a wonderful adventure of amazing displays and lights. A scavenger hunt features Scooby Doo.”
Widmer World is open every evening in December from 6-9 p.m. — and the lines often get longer as the month progresses. An estimated 30,000 people visited
