The Pleasanton Unified School District is hosting a joint special meeting with the city council Tuesday where both governing bodies will discuss topics like enrollment numbers, residential developments planned for construction near school sites and how the district is managing certain assets.
According to the April 28 staff presentation, the meeting will also go over the trustees and council members’ shared value for the city of Pleasanton and the case for why the city and district should continue its partnership.
“We partner because … our work is interconnected, our families and students move through our systems every day, complex challenges require unified solutions [and] collaboration sets the tone for community trust and problem solving,” the presentation reads.
The first major topic that the district will go over with the council will be PUSD’s demographics, including current and projected enrollment numbers and how the district continues to trend down in numbers of total students. One of the main factors behind this trend, according to the presentation, is a significant decline in birth rates.
Staff will then go over residential developments across the city and how there are 20 projects currently active in six of the nine elementary school attendance areas. The staff presentation also shows how there are just over 3,200 total new units included in the seven-year forecast, most of which will be multi-family units.
PUSD will also present updates on some of its own projects including its plans to sell and develop about seven acres at its First Street and Bernal Avenue property — where the district offices were previously located — for housing. PUSD is also assessing nearly five acres of unused field at Donlon Elementary School to potentially sell the land.
The district still needs to declare the land as surplus but, if it does, the city of Pleasanton and other local agencies will be given “first right to negotiate purchase.”
Apart from other residential development activity updates, the two governing bodies will go over some of their current partnerships, specifically regarding the use of facilities, programs and services like the crossing guards and School Resource Officers.
The special joint meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday (April 28). Read the full agenda here.
