The Dublin Unified School District recently named Cottonwood Creek K-8 School principal Lorianne Ventura as the district’s next director of curriculum and instruction, beginning next school year.
She will succeed Sheri Sweeney, who is set to retire at the end of the current school year.
Ventura brings to the role over two decades of experience in education, including over 19 years in administrative roles across school site and district levels, DUSD Superintendent Chris Funk said in a statement. She is also equipped with a doctorate in educational leadership from San Francisco State University.
Since joining DUSD in 2016, Ventura served as principal at John Green Elementary School for about three years before assuming her current post as principal at Cottonwood Creek which she’s held for over six years.
In her new role at the district — announced at the Board of Trustees’ April 15 regular meeting — Ventura will lead and coordinate the ongoing development and improvement of the district’s instructional programs, according to the closed job listing.

“Lori’s energetic, forward-thinking approach and dedication to equity will be invaluable, as we continue to innovate and align curriculum, instruction and assessment across Dublin Unified,” DUSD assistant superintendent of human resources Heather Campos said at the board meeting.
Prior to joining DUSD, Ventura served as a director of assessment and accreditation, commissioner of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and district curriculum manager in the San Jose Unified School District, according to Funk.
“Dr. Ventura’s background reflects a deep commitment to academic excellence, data-driven decision-making, and equity in education,” Funk said.
Within DUSD, she has spearheaded curriculum initiatives and assessments and led accreditation processes as well as implementation of Professional Learning Communities to support educators, according to Campos.
As a DUSD parent, Ventura said she’s ready to take on the new role in a district where staff dedication and passion have helped her children learn and grow.
“I am inspired by the meaningful work already underway in the district and deeply grateful to join a team so dedicated to innovation, collaboration, and student success,” Ventura told the Weekly.
As for her roles at Cottonwood Creek and John Green Elementary, she said being the principal was an “incredible privilege”.
“While I will miss being on campus in the middle of the action, having lunch with our students, seeing learning come to life and hearing great stories, I am excited for the next chapter,” Ventura said. “It is an honor to support all of our schools, our students, our staff and our families in this new role”.
DUSD is currently looking to fill Ventura’s position at Cottonwood Creek for next school year, according to DUSD spokesperson Chip Dehnert.
