After nearly a full academic year of uncertainty surrounding Amador Valley High School principal Jonathan Fey’s unexplained leave of absence, the Pleasanton Unified School District has officially begun searching for a permanent replacement.

PUSD director of communications Patrick Gannon told the Weekly on Wednesday evening the district has already posted the high school principal position on educator job sites such as EDJOIN. According to the site, PUSD listed the job on March 5 and the deadline to apply for the position is March 23.

“Amador Valley High School will be led by a new Principal for the 2025-2026 school year,” Gannon said. “The principal position has been posted and our Human Resources team has begun an aggressive hiring process — which includes gathering input from staff, families and students at Amador Valley.”

Those input gathering sessions with key stakeholders are set to begin next week, Gannon said.

In the meantime, Gannon said that Jr. Yee will carry out as acting principal through the end of the current school year.

Fey’s status as an employee with the district, however, is currently unchanged, according to Gannon. It remains unclear whether or how Fey and the district will part ways.

“The District cannot otherwise comment on confidential personnel matters,” Gannon said.

Yee, who had previously served as a vice principal at Amador before moving to the district in 2020 to become the coordinator of innovation and technology, will be returning to the district office once his time at the high school is over. However, he will instead transition to his new role — coordinator of educational technology.

“We would like to thank Jr. Yee for his exemplary leadership this year,” Gannon said.

The need for the temporary leadership came from Fey’s sudden and indefinite leave of absence announced on Aug. 14. The district has continuously declined to explain Fey’s absence — Gannon previously said it is a matter of privacy that the district is keeping confidential “out of respect for the individual”.

The Weekly currently has an ongoing public records request for documents, emails and other materials involving Fey.

So far, the district has sent numerous batches of records — none of which contained any information about the reason for Fey’s absence since Aug. 14 — with one final batch reportedly to be released later this month.

Gannon has not responded to follow up questions regarding Fey’s standing with the district.
