Dublin is set to see at least three candidates in each race for city offices in the November general election while two of the three school board seats are contested, with the third still looking for its first potential representative to come forward.
For the mayoral post, which is on ballots citywide, first-term Dublin Mayor Sherry Hu is facing a challenge from Councilmember Michael McCorriston, who served as mayor for several months in 2024 by appointment, and newcomer Kiran Mohammad. Perennial candidate Shawn Costello also filed nomination papers on deadline day, Friday, but he was not yet listed as confirmed for the ballot.
Otherwise two available seats on the Dublin City Council are wide open, as neither post has been up for a district-based election since the city shifted away from the at-large election of councilmembers beginning in 2024.
The competition for District 2 includes newcomers Richard Thornbury, Steve Lorey and Daniel Hor have qualified for the ballot. Tejpreet Singh also filed for the election but has not been confirmed.
The District 4 race so far features Councilmember Kashef Qaadri, who was elected at-large four years ago, and newcomers Shivraj Singh and Vasanth Chetan. Another resident, Bhaskar Swaminathan, pulled papers but did not pursue the seat further.
There are three seats up for election on the Dublin Unified School District Board of Trustees, two of which feature extended filing deadlines.
There are currently no candidates running for the Area 2 seat, representing northwest Dublin. Departing Area 2 Trustee Kristin Speck confirmed that she will not be running for reelection. Prospective candidates now have until next Wednesday (Aug. 12) to join the race because Speck did not file.
The contest for Area 3, representing part of southeast Dublin, thus far features newcomers Shalini Bhandari and James “Tanner” Frye. The winner will secure a two-year term, rather than a four-year term, due to the two-year provisional appointment of departing Trustee Carolina Martinez, who did not file for reelection.
Current Area 5 Trustee Robert Daniel Cherrier is facing Seema Badar, who most recently ran for the Zone 7 Water Agency Board of Directors but lost in the primary election. The ballot is set for Area 5, covering an area approximately bound by Central Parkway, Fallon Road and Tassajara Road.
For Dublin San Ramon Services District, incumbent Director Georgean Vonheeder-Leopold was the only candidate to file for Division 4 in central Dublin. The Division 2 election saw no candidates submit by Friday, so the deadline has been extended to next Wednesday for the position representing southwestern San Ramon.
The wider region
The East Bay Regional Park District will see four seats up for election on its Board of Directors, including a contested race for Ward 5 representing Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, Fremont and Newark. Incumbent Olivia Sanwong will face newcomer Bruce Henry.
Democrats Melissa Hernandez, a former Dublin mayor, and Aisha Wahab are the sole candidates for Congressional District 14. The pair are also competing in the Aug. 18 special general election for the months-long remainder of the term vacated by Rep. Eric Swalwell amid sexual misconduct allegations.
In the State Assembly District 16 race, Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) is set to face off against real estate appraiser Joe Rubay (R-Alamo) for the fourth time in the last six years.
The seat represents the communities of Alamo, Danville, Dublin, Lafayette, Livermore, Moraga, Orinda, Pleasanton, San Ramon and Walnut Creek.
Back in June, Bauer-Kahan ended the primary election with nearly 64% of the vote while Rubay finished with 32.15% of the vote.
