The Dublin Unified School District announced this week Monica MacDonald will be the next principal of Wells Middle School, beginning the 2025-26 school year.
She will be replacing Sukanya Goswami, who is scheduled to step down from the role after one year at the helm.
Under the direction of Goswami, MacDonald will begin the transition from her current role as assistant principal of Kolb Elementary to Wells after spring break.
The former DUSD student, having attended Nielsen Elementary, Wells and Dublin High School, said she is excited to come full-circle.
“Returning to Wells Middle School as its next principal is an incredibly personal and meaningful milestone for me,” MacDonald said in a statement. “This school played a pivotal role in my journey as a student, and now, I have the privilege of leading it into the future.”
MacDonald holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from CSU Sacramento and a Master of Education in language and literacy from San Francisco State University.
Throughout her career, she has worked as an English and academic literacy teacher, induction coach and director of student services in cities including Sacramento, Hayward, Emeryville and Oakland. In the Oakland Unified School District, she served as a peer assistant and review consultant before becoming principal at Vincent Academy, an elementary school.
Then in 2020, she returned to her home district of DUSD to become assistant principal of Kolb.
“Hiring from within our district is always rewarding, but in this case, it’s especially meaningful because we have the opportunity to elevate someone who has not only proven themselves as an administrator but is also a product of our district and the very school she will soon lead,” said Chris Funk, superintendent of DUSD. “Monica’s journey — from student to administrator — exemplifies the dedication, passion, and excellence we strive to instill in every learner.”
MacDonald’s appointment comes amid a year-long stretch of transition for Wells.
Mark Neal led the school from July 2020 to February 2024, followed by interim principal Whitney Dwyer for the final few months of the 2023-24 school year. Goswami was named the permanent principal headed into 2024-25, but her tenure will only last one year.
Goswami did not respond to requests for comment about her departure or where she is headed next as of Friday afternoon.
