After extinguishing a major structure fire in downtown Danville this week, the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is continuing to investigate its cause, which they said is not believed at this point to be arson.

Danville police were first alerted to the fire at 120 to 140 E. Prospect Ave., arriving at the scene shortly before 10 p.m. Monday (Oct. 20) to secure the site and confirm that no one was in the buildings before firefighters made their way over.

Upon visiting the site Tuesday morning, town officials and fire personnel deemed the structure unfit for occupancy, with the businesses it houses required to remain closed to the public until it is found to be structurally sound. It was not clear as of this week how long that might be.

In their update Thursday, town officials sought to address rumors that had circulated online in which the building and businesses impacted by the fire were misidentified. They emphasized that Danville Chocolates and the Veterans Memorial Building and senior center were not damaged by the fire.

“Those sites were unaffected, but our thoughts are with the longtime owner of the building at Prospect Lane, as well as the business owners operating there,” town officials said.
