Kathy Narum will step down as president of the Pleasanton Seahawks June 30 when her one-year term of office expires, ending 12 years of active work in the organization that has helped it become a nationally-recognized, award-winning swim club.

Narum, who has been a member of the Pleasanton Planning Commission for a year, became involved with the Seahawks when her daughters Jennifer and Lisa started swimming. Both girls have achieved top qualifying times in many of the swim meets they’ve competed in and have won athletic scholarships to college.

Jennifer, 19, is a sophomore at the University of Virginia, where she is on the women’s varsity swim team. Lisa, 18, a senior at Amador Valley High School, has been accepted early by Ohio State University at Columbus, where she, too, will swim with the women’s team. Both will also continue their affiliation with the Seahawks, becoming part of the club’s College Away program that gives them full swimming privileges for $300 a year.

Narum has held a number of leadership positions with the Seahawks, serving as its president for 2-1/2 years in the 1990s and also as treasurer for two years. In addition to the Planning Commission, she was on the Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Commission for five years, served on the Bernal Property and Bernal Park task forces and was on the Rage girls’ soccer board of directors for two years.

She’s a firm believer that school athletics shape students into becoming better students, citizens and role models for others. But it’s hard. Her daughters practiced with the Seahawks weekday mornings, often starting at 4:15 a.m., and then again after school until 6 p.m. at the earliest. Besides breakfast and supper and nightly homework, there wasn’t much time for anything else.

“Students, like each of us, make choices in their lives,” Narum said. “When you commit to an outside activity such as the Seahawks and to doing the best you possibly can as a swimmer and as a student, you’ve made a tough choice that will make you a stronger and better person for the rest of your life. It’s a commitment that lasts forever.”
