The two suspects in a child sex abuse case, including the Delta co-pilot who was taken into custody during a high-profile arrest from the cockpit at SFO, pleaded not guilty this week to the multiple child sex abuse charges they were arrested for last month.

Rustom Bhagwagar, a former San Ramon resident, and Jennifer Spitz Powell, an Alamo resident, appeared in Contra Costa County Superior Court for arraignment Tuesday afternoon.

The delayed arraignment – approximately three weeks after both suspects were arrested – came from a request for additional time to review the case from both defense attorneys, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office.

“Both defendants (through their attorneys) told the judge that they were not waiving their right to a speedy trial,” officials with the DA’s office wrote on Facebook Tuesday.

The two remain in custody, with bail set at $15 million each. They are set to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 29.
