PUSD superintendent search drags on
The Pleasanton Unified School District is continuing deliberations toward hiring its next permanent superintendent, but the process hit a bit of a snag this week and the timeline for identifying a finalist remains unclear.
The Board of Trustees held another closed-door special meeting last Sunday to discuss the new superintendent appointment and was poised to reveal their top candidate and their proposed contract on Monday ahead of Thursday’s regular public board meeting where that employment agreement was to be up for an approval vote.
However, late Monday afternoon, Board President Justin Brown announced that Thursday’s regular meeting was called off as deliberations were still ongoing. “Next steps are now being discussed and we are electing to cancel our June 5th meeting to allow adequate time to make the best decision for our students, families and valued Pleasanton staff,” Brown said without providing specifics.
On Wednesday, PUSD scheduled a special closed-session board meeting for Thursday (June 5) at 6 p.m. for the trustees to talk in private the appointment of a new superintendent as a discussion-only item with no action to be considered.
A new hearing date to consider the next superintendent’s contract had not been scheduled as of Thursday afternoon. The board has hoped to have a permanent leader selected and in position for the start of the 2025-26 school year – with Interim Superintendent Maurice Ghysels’ year-long temporary tenure expected to end this month.
