The opioid crisis has touched countless lives across the nation, and Alameda County is no exception. While the challenges are real, hope is found in the many effective therapies and local resources available to those seeking recovery. Treating opioid addiction is not a one-size-fits-all process. The most successful approaches combine medical treatment with counseling and community support. Here are the three main types of therapy used:

  1. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): MAT is considered the gold standard for opioid addiction. It uses safe, doctor-prescribed medications to ease withdrawal and reduce cravings. The most common medications are:
  • Methadone: Taken daily at specialized clinics, it helps prevent withdrawal and cravings.
  • Buprenorphine (Suboxone): Can be prescribed by many doctors and taken at home.
  • Naltrexone: Blocks the effects of opioids and helps prevent relapse.

These medications are most effective when combined with counseling and support.

  1. Behavioral Therapies: Behavioral therapies help people understand and change the thoughts and habits that lead to drug use. Popular approaches include:
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Teaches skills to handle stress and avoid triggers.
  • Motivational Interviewing: Encourages people to find their own reasons for making positive changes.
  • Group and Family Counseling: Offers support, connection, and healing for both individuals and their loved ones.
  1. Residential and Community Support: Some people benefit from living in a supportive, drug-free environment while they recover. Residential programs and sober living homes provide structure, therapy, and peer encouragement.

Why Therapy Matters

Research shows that therapy and support can:

  • Lower the risk of overdose and relapse
  • Improve mental health and daily functioning
  • Help people rebuild relationships and careers
  • Offer hope for long-term recovery

Therapy is not just about stopping drug use, but about building a healthier, more fulfilling life.
