The Pleasanton City Council on Tuesday is set to receive an update on the city’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Implementation Plan, which aims to create a culture of equity and belonging in the city government.
In 2022, the council authorized staff to complete a diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) study that was customized to look into the specific needs and culture of the city organization, according to the staff report. The assessment included surveying staff, holding focus groups and evaluating city policies to identify strengths and challenges regarding the City’s organizational culture.
Those study assessment findings and series of recommendations were then used to develop a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategic Plan, which was included in the city’s 2019-20 priorities work plan. The development of the DEI plan was put on pause due to the pandemic, but was restarted in 2022.
According to the report, the plan will “identify, analyze and address equity gaps in (Pleasanton) services … and establish appropriate benchmarks, programs, policies and implementation strategies and systems to lift up all populations in our community.”
Staff will be going over the now completed organization-wide diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging study as well as the steps taken to complete the overall strategic plan. Those completed steps include convening a task force of city staff; developing recommendations and an action plan; and working with a DEI consultant to continue the implementation work, the staff report states.
Staff will also touch on how the city hired an outside consultant to provide DEI consulting services from December 2023 to June 2024, which will provide the city with guidance, support and leadership and will help lead a city task force and council to implement the DEI Strategic Plan.
“Building the framework to embed DEIB best practices in the city organization is an essential step toward continuously improving the organization’s ability to deliver quality services to the public by hiring and retaining top talent,” according to the staff report.
The City Council meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 16) in the council chambers at the Pleasanton Civic Center, 200 Old Bernal Ave. The full agenda can be accessed here.
